Dr. Tyson Voigt is an avid orchestral, chamber, and contemporary percussionist whose performances range from the latest avant-garde to early music classics. His performances frequently include cross-genre and interdisciplinary collaborations, spanning coast-to-coast and beyond. He currently serves as Assistant Professor and Director of Percussion Studies at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida.
Tyson’s greatest love is for chamber music, fueled by his ardor for contemporary music and a desire for social dialogue. A prime example is the soprano/percussion Resound Duo, with Dr. Jennifer Voigt, soprano.
Tyson has performed with numerous orchestras (Imperial Symphony Orchestra, Midland/Odessa Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, The Orchestra Now, Florida Grand Opera, West Palm Beach Symphony, Miami Symphony), chamber groups (Two, Resound Duo, The Sebastians, Unbound Ensemble, renew music group), commercial bands (Current Nine, Erica Lane), jazz groups (Basin Brass Band, Good Time Family Band, Dan Ferguson Trio), and as a soloist across the country and in Europe. These engagements have taken him to Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and many other wonderful venues. These engagements included work with several of music’s superstars, such as Pulitzer Prize-winning composers David Lang and Steve Reich as well as renowned composers Alejandro Viñao, Scott McAllister, Paul Dooley, and Charles Mason. He has also performed and studied with many of today’s top percussionists including Steven Schick, Meehan/Perkins Duo, Svet Stoyanov, So Percussion (quartet), Michael Burritt, Matthew Strauss, Tom Freer, and many others.
The duo is devoted to commissioning new works addressing social topics through dramatic performance. With 13 commissions thus far, the two most recent are Scott McAllister’s “Little Jagged Jesus,” exploring the inner spiritual struggle of a cancer patient, and their 2018 premiere “Majkas” by Dominican composer Jose Puello, examining sexism through the lens of motherhood. Additionally, as a passionate educator, Tyson has teamed up with percussionist Matthew Nichols as the duo Two. Two is dedicated to recording previously under-celebrated percussion music, especially that found on high school contest lists around the country. Their first volume of works, titled Just Two, will be released through the Hoot/Wisdom Recordings label in 2022.
Tyson endorses Remo products and resides with his family in Lakeland, Florida.
Tyson holds degrees from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and Baylor University. In addition to performing and teaching, he enjoys spending time at home with his wife and two children.
